AMR & FEED: Channel Coding Concepts for Speech Transmission

چکیده

In mobile communications systems the channel quality is determined by two physical effects: The short term fading due to scattering, reflections and interference and the long term fading due to the change of the geographical surroundings. Since the influence of the short term fading can be easily reduced by using interleaving techniques, the main channel coding task is to cope with the long term fading. In this paper two channel coding concepts for speech transmission over a mobile communication system are presented and compared to each other as well as to a conventional coding system. The first concept is the Adaptive Multi-Rate Codec (AMR-Codec) based on channel adapted mode switching. The second concept is the Far End Error Decoder (FEED) based on high memory convolutional codes and sequential decoding.

Study and Performance of AMR Codecs for GSM

In wireless communication system, limited bandwidth and power is the primary restriction. The existing wireless systems involved in transmission of speech visualized that efficient and effective methods be developed to transmit and receive the same while maintaining quality of speech, especially at the receiving end. Speech coding technique is a material of research for the scientific and acade...

Channel Coding Techniques for Adaptive Multi Rate Speech Transmission

A variable channel coding scheme for Adaptive Multi Rate (AMR) speech transmission over mobile radio channels is proposed. Although it was developed for the GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications), the basic concept of variable channel coding can be adopted to other digital radio systems. The new AMR concept allows almost wire-line speech quality even for poor channel conditions by dynami...

A 6.1 to 13.3-kb/s variable rate CELP codec (VR-CELP) for AMR speech coding

We propose a new 6.1 to 13.3-kb/s speech codec called variable rate code-excited linear prediction (VR-CELP) for Adaptive Multi-Rate (AMR) transmission over mobile radio channels such as GSM or UMTS. The AMR concept allows to operate with almost wireline speech quality for poor channel conditions and better quality for good channel conditions. This is achieved by dynamically splitting the gross...

Adaptive Multi - Rate Wir

Distributed speech recognition (DSR) is motivated by the fact that codecs used in speech transmission usually reveal a degrading voice quality below some channel quality (carrier-to-interferer ratio C/I), which justifies efficient coding of features with an appropriate channel coding in the mobile terminal. The Adaptive MultiRate (AMR) speech codec standardized for GSM and UMTS however delivers...

Quality control for UMTS-AMR speech channels

In UMTS speech transmissions, the Adaptive Multi-Rate (AMR) speech codec is employed to allow for a dynamic assignment of data rates to individual users. The control of AMR modes is based on quality measurements of the transmission channel and aims at the maximization of speech quality by selecting the mode which is best suited to the current interference situation. In contrast to GSM, a reduct...
